Learn the fundamentals of editing films using Premiere Pro. This class will teach you professional techniques for editing fiction and nonfiction films.

Media Labs: 2D-3D-4D

Learn a variety of digital design and illustration techniques that cut across the boundaries of 2D, 3D and 4D. You will create designs using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, along with 3D animation software Cinema 4D, and finally output your designs into virtual reality using Oculus Rift.

Media Labs: Digital Character Design

No matter your style, from chibi to realistic, take your sketches to the next level by creating digitally illustrated character designs. Sketch and refine your character, then digitally paint it with a tablet and stylus.

Summer Camps: Animation Exploration (Half Day Camp)

Make worlds that exist only in your head come to life before your eyes, frame by frame. From sand or paint on glass to pixelation to life-sized animations, explore a new style of stop-motion animation each day. Students will leave at the end of the week with a mini portfolio of animated works, an enhanced ability to work collaboratively, and the skills to give random objects lives of their own.

Summer Camps: Game Design and Robotics

Partner Camp with Natural History Museum of Utah
Robotics and coding, what could be better?! Participants will spend part of their day under the guidance of Museum staff, exploring simple and complex machines. They’ll then put that new knowledge to work as they complete team challenges using VEX IQ robotic components. The other part of the day will be spent at Spy Hop, learning the ins-and-outs of coding and game design. We have two sessions of this camp; the Boys Only session starts at NHMU at 8:30am and ends at Spy Hop at 4:30pm. The Girls Only session starts at Spy Hop at 8:30am and ends at NHMU at 4:30pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

Make a cheesy horror film that makes your audience jump and laugh. Discover the paranormal through film techniques used in classic horror films.

Need to finish that song that you’ve been kicking around in your head? This workshop will focus on writing lyrics, arranging, and creating memorable melodies. You will leave with a recording of your finished song.

Reel Stories

Resonate

Resonate is an advanced, fast-paced hip-hop production program that celebrates the use of rap as a vehicle for storytelling and social change. In this condensed summer Resonate class our focus will be all about the BEAT! You will spend 2 months learning advanced production techniques using Ableton Live music production software. You’ll dig deeper into sampling, sound design, merging acoustic and electronic musical elements, mixing, basic music theory and creating your own unique touches in your music.

Summer Camps: On Belay, Game On

Partner Camp with The Front Climbing Gym
Experience the thrill of rock climbing in The Front Climbing Club’s state-of-the-art indoor facility, and try scaling the seventy-foot walls, the tallest in the country! You will learn climbing fundamentals such as how to use equipment and rope work, movement, and problem solving. Spend the afternoon with Spy Hop using the software Unity3D to create a rock climbing video game. Follow a path up the wall to reach the top. As your character climbs the wall they will need to watch out for killer bees, and spiders. You will create your own digital artwork to put into the game. Drop off in the mornings at The Front and pickup at Spy Hop in the afternoon. Transportation between sites is provided.

Summer Camps: Shadows Take the Stage (Half Day Camp)

Have you ever wanted to act or perform, but maybe you didn’t want to be on stage? Instead of the curtain opening to reveal your story, you will be telling it from behind the curtain. After making custom puppets and sets, you will shine a light on them, casting the shadows that, with your direction, bring your story to life.

Partner Camp with Clever Octopus
In this collaboration between Clever Octopus and Spy Hop, you will make found object instruments, use them to create original songs, and record them for the world to hear. You will spend the morning at Clever Octopus building instruments from everyday objects and “junk” that you discover in the craft shop. Then, you will bring those custom instruments to Spy Hop studios to learn about the process of making and recording songs. You will have hands-on experience in songwriting, crafting, Pro Tools and Ableton software, and various recording techniques. Morning drop-off is at Clever Octopus, afternoon pickup at Spy Hop. Partner Camp with The Bboy Federation
You will spend your mornings learning four styles of hip-hop dance, and how to create an individual style of your own. Spend your afternoons in a fast-paced hip-hop collaboration experience with Spy Hop. Using music production software, you will write original beats and produce your own music. Experience the thrill of rock climbing in The Front Climbing Club’s state-of-the-art indoor facility, and try scaling the seventy-foot walls, the tallest in the country! You will learn climbing fundamentals such as how to use equipment and rope work, movement, and problem solving. Then you will document your climbing route up the wall using various filmmaking and photography techniques. You will create artistic videos and photos that are fun to look at and even cooler to experiment with. Camp will be held at The Front.
