Voices of
The West

Immersive, week-long filmmaking workshops in rural and indigenous areas of Utah, elevating the voices and ideas of young people, and celebrating what makes their communities unique.

A Rural Filmmaking Project: Since 2018

Every year since 2018, Spy Hop’s team of professional teaching artists pack up cameras, recording gear, and laptops to spend three weeks in rural Utah leading immersive, week-long film workshops. The students, ages 13-19 learn the fundamentals of filmmaking and storytelling, beginning with a silent film, and finishing with a short film highlighting something or someone from the community. Each week culminates with a public screening open to their friends, family, and community members.

This program helps to close the “digital divide” between rural and urban communities and increase media literacy and civic engagement for young people across Utah.

The program is made possible by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
