About this class

Join an indie band, write songs, and make a record in this 10-month intensive workshop. We’re looking for youth singers and musicians who play guitar, bass, keys, or drums with foundational music experience who want to come together to create a band, collaborate to write original songs, and perform live concerts around the Salt Lake Valley. From early demos to a fully mixed and mastered album, you will be a part of a band composing the music you want to hear that will be released to the world at the annual Heatwave Festival. Make new friends, make great music, and contribute to Salt Lake’s homegrown music scene!

Cathy Foy (she/her)

Lead Musical Arts Mentor

Hello, my name is Cathy Foy. I am the Musical Arts Mentor at Spy Hop. I currently teach Songwriting, Rock Band, Musicology, and Music Promotion Apprenticeships (801 Sessions). I started my musical path as a teenage drummer. Drumming has always been my first love and connection to music. When I was young, I had aspirations of being in a rock band and when I was 17, I joined my first band which was a life changing experience for me.

I spent the next decade of my life playing in many projects in the Salt Lake music scene and toured all over the nation. Also, during this time, I picked up the guitar and started writing my own songs. I recorded a couple of solo albums and then put together a band called Strong Words. We released four albums within five years and opened for notable national acts.

Currently, I just released another solo album and perform under Cathy Foy and The Mellows. Along with being an active musician, I started to teach private music lessons at a local drum shop. That’s where I really fell in love with teaching people of all ages the drums. This evolved into teaching guitar, ukulele and bass. I volunteered at the Rock Camp for Girls in Portland and Salt Lake and coached youth bands. I have now been teaching at Spy Hop for four years and love getting to know all of my students, helping them with the creative process and seeing the rad things they create!
