CAPSTONE PROGRAM

1 Musicology

Musicology is Spy Hop’s capstone rock band program. Teen musicians in this class come together and form a band and produce a full-length album from scratch. From songwriting, to instruments, to recording, to performing across the valley, students receive state-of-the-art instruction from our full-time teaching music artist, Cathy.

Every summer, the community celebrates the music albums produced by both the Musicology and Resonate programs at Heatwave, Spy Hop’s annual album release music festival!

Where do I start?

You don’t need to be a pro musician to join Musicology! All you need are some foundational musical skills. A great way to build your skills and prepare for the Musicology audition is to take some of our foundational music and audio classes (which, as always, are free)!

Meet the Mentors

Cathy Foy (she/her)

Lead Musical Arts Mentor

Hello, my name is Cathy Foy. I am the Musical Arts Mentor at Spy Hop. I currently teach Songwriting, Rock Band, Musicology, and Music Promotion Apprenticeships (801 Sessions). I started my musical path as a teenage drummer. Drumming has always been my first love and connection to music. When I was young, I had aspirations of being in a rock band and when I was 17, I joined my first band which was a life changing experience for me.

I spent the next decade of my life playing in many projects in the Salt Lake music scene and toured all over the nation. Also, during this time, I picked up the guitar and started writing my own songs. I recorded a couple of solo albums and then put together a band called Strong Words. We released four albums within five years and opened for notable national acts.

Currently, I just released another solo album and perform under Cathy Foy and The Mellows. Along with being an active musician, I started to teach private music lessons at a local drum shop. That’s where I really fell in love with teaching people of all ages the drums. This evolved into teaching guitar, ukulele and bass. I volunteered at the Rock Camp for Girls in Portland and Salt Lake and coached youth bands. I have now been teaching at Spy Hop for four years and love getting to know all of my students, helping them with the creative process and seeing the rad things they create!
