Loud & Clear Youth Radio is Spy Hop’s capstone radio-production program. Every Saturday night the Loudies are live on the air, hosting their own radio show on 90.9 FM KRCL

Join the Loudies, and spend a year learning the fundamentals of community radio! From DJing, to writing pieces for the radio, to editing, students receive state-of-the-art instruction from our full-time teaching radio production artist, Lou, in collaboration with KRCL.

Loud and Clear Youth Radio is Utah’s only weekly, youth-produced radio show. Be the mouthpiece for Salt Lake’s youth!

Every fall, Utah’s only weekly youth-produced radio show puts together a new crew for the year! Become a Loudie and learn everything you need to be a radio DJ. Make your voice heard, play music you love, talk about issues that are important to you, and broadcast it all live as part of a really rad community.

Where do I start?

You don’t need to be a pro (or have ever touched a microphone) to be part of Loud & Clear! A great way to build radio production skills and prepare for the Loud & Clear interview is to take some of our foundational audio classes (which, as always, are free)!

Meet the Mentors

Lou Ruegner (they/them)

Radio Production Mentor

Lou Ruegner is the Radio Production Mentor for Loud and Clear. Before working with Spy Hop, they were the technical manager of K-Ute Radio, where they oversaw the station’s operation and trained student hosts to facilitate radio programming. In addition, they’ve operated live sound and recording systems and run stages at many venues around the valley, including Kilby Court, The Beehive, Abravanel Hall, and Rose Wagner.

Lou holds a bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies and Music Technology from the University of Utah. In their spare time, they enjoy walking their dog and writing music with their partner.
