About this class

We’re packing our cameras, recording gear, and laptops and heading to Blanding for a week-long film workshop apprenticeship! Get paid to tell your story, and the stories of your community. We’ll teach you the fundamentals, you bring the creativity.

No experience necessary.

Over the course of 1-week you will:

  • Use professional filmmaking equipment provided by Spy Hop to make your short films
  • Write your story, plan your shot list, schedule your interviews, and learn all the steps for pre-production  
  • Learn narrative and documentary filmmaking techniques
  • Experiment with using music and sound to enhance your films 
  • Edit your film on Davinci Resolve Software
Thomas (Tommy) Kastrati (he/they)

Statewide Media Arts Mentor

Tommy is an animator and cartoonist who has worked on the art department for various film and tv productions for broadcast as well as independent films, documentaries, and stage productions.  They specialize in character animation, storyboards, illustration, screen/script writing, film, photography, with a specialty in prop design, sculpture and plush or puppet design.

At Spy Hop, Tommy travels to many schools, sharing their expertise with an array of different students throughout the state of Utah.

Ricky Vigil (he/him)

Teen Outreach Program/Media Arts Mentor

Ricky Vigil is an illustrator and educator from Salt Lake City. He has been making the autobiographical comic zine Super Cool and Stuff since 2011. His comics have been published by SLUG Magazine, City Weekly, Razorcake, Vagabond Comics, Hey Kids! Comics and more. He has also created art for bands, record labels, local businesses and classrooms. He thinks that if he can be an artist, anyone can be an artist. 

Alfonso (Fonzy) Belloso (he/him)

Statewide Media Arts Mentor

Alfonso (Fonzy) Belloso is a filmmaker, photographer, music producer, and novice journalist living in Salt Lake City. 

Originally from Los Angeles, where he studied audio engineering at the Musicians Institute. 

Alfonso is a creator who has worked with Grammy Award-winning engineers in the recording industry, composed music for films, and produced albums for independent artists.

Personal Statement:  “I only aim to make a positive and memorable experience for the people of the planet. I hope to inspire my community and the next generation of creators.”
