Film and Movement (all day camp)

In partnership with the Salt Lake Arts Academy
Explore a unique collaboration between Salt Lake Arts Academy and Spy Hop as we bring together the art of movement and the media arts to create short films based on original music and dance pieces. You will have hands-on experience with music composition, stage rigging, lighting techniques, and the art of cinematography. Drop camper off at Salt Lake Arts Academy by 9:00am and pick them up at Spy Hop at 4:00pm. Transportation between sites is provided.

Run Spy Hop’s weekly open studio program, Open Mic, learn Ableton Live and Pro Tools and do post production for PitchNic films and game design projects.

Resonate: Hip Hop Production

Resonate is an advanced, fast paced hip hop production program that celebrates the use of rap as as a vehicle for storytelling and social change.

In this intensive 4-month class, you will be challenged to write verses that relate to your life, your community and the world. Using Ableton music production software, you will produce original beats, learn about sampling, basic music theory and mixing basics for your records. You even get to perform on the radio and in front of live audiences!

801 Sessions

As an 801 Sessions staff member, you’ll plan, book, promote and film a monthly all-ages event called 801 SESSIONS LIVE! held at local venues in Salt Lake City.

The 801 Sessions staff will handpick three local musical acts each month and produce an exclusive video of the headliner performing their songs and discussing their music. These videos, along with free downloads of live music from the event, will go up on the 801 Sessions video blog promoted by Spy Hop and SLUG Magazine.

Over the course of a few months, you will learn a wide variety of skills from audio and video production to marketing and event planning to artist management and accounting.

Loud & Clear Youth Radio

Loud and Clear is the only weekly, youth-produced radio program in Utah, and offers teens a hands-on experience on-air. Host your own radio show, play the music you want to hear, and talk about the issues that are important to you every Saturday night from 9-10 PM on 90.9 FM KRCL.

During the 10-month program, Loud and Clear Youth Radio will teach you how to produce radio shows, DJ, and host live bands. Reach over 2,000 listeners every week and create a forum of youth listeners.

PitchNic

Spend a year with 5 other passionate, experienced, creative teens to write, shoot and edit a 20 minute film.

Broken into two groups, documentary and narrative, each student spends time working on story ideas and then pitches them to a panel of film professionals. The winning six pitches advance to the final round and are narrowed down to four final films by the class. Each film is created by a team of three; a director, producer and cinematographer. The rest of the class is spent learning first-hand how to create a professional-caliber film.

Musicology

Spy Hop’s Musicology program gives young musicians a one-of-a-kind opportunity to write, record, and produce original music with other like minded, music savvy teens. From songwriting to recording in Spy Hop’s state of the art recording studio to your very own CD release party, The Heatwave Festival. Musicology will give you the full experience of being in a band.

Musicology is a ten-month program emphasizing the creative process of making an album. Students will begin by auditioning for one of eight openings in the program. Each student who is accepted will be a member of the band as they write original music and contribute to the recording process. Along the way, the band will collaborate to produce an album, create original cover art and perform at local venues.

Power Up Game Design Lab

Over the course of ten months, ten students will design and create fully functional and professional games that will be published in Apple’s App Store and other gaming platforms. In this hands-on indie studio simulation, you’ll work in a team of other teen programmers, graphic artists and producers.

Each student will pitch ideas for a game around a social, community or global issue. A panel of industry professionals will help narrow down your ideas to the two games that will be designed and produced.
